When can you apply?

For some programs you can apply right after you register. For other programs you can apply at the time your course starts. For more information, you can ask our help desk.


Where can you get more information about loan and bursary?

At www.afe.gouv.qc.ca or ask for Cristina at the counter. You also can reach her at 514-747-2161 Ext. 114.


How much can I get for loan and bursary?

It varies from student to student. You can always have an idea of the amount at www.afe.gouv.qc.ca; on the left-side of the web page, you will see a CALCULATOR link, click on it, answer the questions and at the end it will tell you the approximate amount you can get.


Am I eligible to request loan and bursary?

To be eligible you have to meet the following criteria:

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee
  • be a Québec resident or to fulfill one of the following points:
    1. Québec is the last place where you resided for 12 consecutive-months without pursuing full-time studies during this period;
    2. You hold a Québec selection certificate (CSQ)
    3. You have been residing in Québec for at least three months and have not resided in another Canadian province for more than three months.
  • be admitted to a recognized educational institution and be pursuing or be deemed to be pursuing full-time studies in a recognized program;
  • not have exceeded the period of eligibility for which financial assistance may be awarded;
  • not have reached the debt limit established for your level of education, type of degree or program;

Note – Students in university programs or the equivalent qualify for financial assistance for an overall maximum of 88 months.

 

Debt Limit for Loans depending on the Level of Education

Secondary school

Vocational training $22 000

College

• Pre-university Education $16 000

• Technical Training

– Subsidized Programs $23 000

– Subsidized Programs offered at a Private Educational Institution $27 000

• Unsubsidized Technical Training $27 000

 

EXPENSES may be reimbursed while you are a full time student

The cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses

$185/person per 24-month period

This expense is allowed in the month of purchase.


When will you have to pay back the loan?

One month after you finish your full-times studies, you become responsible for the interest

charges on your student loan debt. However, you start repaying the capital on that debt to

the financial institution after six months.

 

Students who continue full-time studies during that six-month period are not required to

begin repaying the interest on their student loan debt. The interest will be paid by the

government.
